Definition

A catheter placed into a large central vein (commonly internal jugular, subclavian or femoral) with its tip in a central venous location to provide reliable central venous access for infusion of vasoactive or irritant drugs, rapid fluid resuscitation, hemodynamic monitoring and blood sampling; placement and care require sterile technique and tip‑position confirmation.
