Metabolic pathways within cells that convert biochemical energy stored in nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP) while producing reduced cofactors and waste products; in typical eukaryotic cells this includes glycolysis in the cytosol, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle in mitochondria, and oxidative phosphorylation coupled to an electron transport chain that often uses oxygen as the terminal
