Definition

The mechanical and surgical process of removing carious and defective dental hard tissue and shaping the remaining tooth to create an appropriate geometry—including access, resistance and retention form and sound margins—necessary for durable placement and performance of a chosen restorative material while conserving as much healthy tooth structure as feasible.
