Definition

A computational technique that obtains sensitivities (gradients) of one or a few scalar objectives or constraints with respect to many design or control variables by solving an adjoint (transposed, linearized) problem derived from the governing equations; the cost of computing the full gradient is approximately independent of the number of design variables and scales with the number of objectives
